"Mrs. Rosanna Maltbie admitted guardian of Timothy Maltbie son of Samuel Maltbie, deceased."

As Samuel Maltby died when but twenty seven years of age, there is little to record of him. He is, of course, the "Samuel Maltby, Junior," of the Northford Episcopal Church record, where (p. 6 Episcopal Records) "Samuel Maltby and son Samuel, for Sundries in building the house,

Samuel Maltby died Aug. 18, 1774, at Northford. His widow, Roxanna (or Rosanna) mar. (2), Nov. 30, 1786, John Page.

The following items are from Selina (Maltby) Foote, grand-dau. of Samuel Maltby (4).

"Grandfather Maltby's father was Samuel Maltby. Grandfather died aged about 27. He married Rosanna Coe of Durham. Her father was killed in a well by a hod of stone tipping over on his back, while he was in the well.

Her mother's name was Anna Morris of East Haven. Miss Morris was an only child, born in East Haven, but went with her parents to Durham, where she married Mr. Coe. The family of Morris still exist in East Haven.

Rosanna Coe married Samuel Maltby

Sarah Coe married James Maltby, (brother of Samuel) lived in Northford and had a child James Maltby of Wallingford. He mar. first Selina Williams, and second, Elizabeth Gould. No child- ren. Mar. third--a widow, no children."

"Rosanna Coe, widow of Samuel, lived in the old house till she married again. Aunt Ruth's house. His father Samuel"(Maltby)"built the house, I am pretty sure. Perhaps 8 or 10 years, married again, John Page of Northford, then she left her Maltby home.

John was five years old whe his Father died and Mother" (wife of John (5) Elizabeth Ives) "lived there ten years, (he would have been 15) and lived on the road from Northford to North Guilford, or Hill road.

Maltby house probably in care of Grandmother Lewis, her 1st husband's step-mother, who survived the Maltby and went to North Guilford to live with connections."

Notes from "Aunt Ruth"--i.e. Ruth Collins who married Samuel Chauncy Maltby (6) grandson of Samuel (4), concerning the clock, mentioned in Samuel's will.

"Grandfather" (Samuel (4)) "bought the clock fifty years ago, or more, a wooden clock, and Mr. Douglas took it and thought it would cost more to repair then to get another, and took it home thinking he could make it go and left the present clock, but he never succeeded, I believe. The Clock at Aunt Foot's was Samuel's. We never could set it going."

(A stray note of Mrs. Cushman states: "Rosanna Page (widow of Samuel (4)) "has a document in Guilford; also the heart and hand ring which was a wedding gift from Samuel to his wife.") She parted with it for a silver thimble!"

Letter from Aunt Ruth. "Oct. 19, 1866"

"Grandmother Page broke down and lost her mind. She lived a mile above here at her Page husband's"

"Grandfather (Samuel (4)) said he was baptized at the Episcopal Church. Grandpa ceased keeping this place a tavern when Grandma Hoadly died."

"He kept the tavern when Samuel Chauncy died and left off pretty soon after.

"Aunt Foot" (Selina (6) Maltby) had had her setting out before.

"Juliana (dau. of John) had five or six hundred dollars that my husband gave her.

John $1000, making the farm 25,000 when husband died.

Grandfather settled up debts and took the farm. John adminis- tered Grandfather's Estate. Grandfather's estate settled by will, distributed to children and grandchildren. Gave House and I took what I had and bought farm and house of Aunt Foote and John.

Mother had her right in house when Father died after it was given to Samuel. Samuel was to support Grandma. When she came here she didn't expect to stay after Grandfather died but she chose to stay and then Samuel had house.

Grandma Douglas" (2nd wife of John (5)) "was very kind woman to all the family--a lovely woman.

I see her child now, only one son, Benjamin." (I think here she must refer to Douglas children).

"Uncle Samuel joined the Church before I came to Northford, 3 or 4 years before I should think. Charles Foote was four years old when I came to Northford." Ruth Collins, dau. of Daniel and Eunice Rosseter from North Guilford."

(Note. These accounts of "Aunt Ruth" and "Aunt Foote" were on notes collected by Mrs. Cushman, a descendant of Samuel Maltby. They were difficult to decipher and also--in some cases, not easy to dis- tinguish the generation of the person referred to. They are in- cluded, as best may be, as furnishing a clearer picture of our fore- bears than could be obtained from statistics alone.)
